Google Groups receives an almighty restyle and rebirth

Google Groups restyle
With nary a muffled fanfare and eclipsed by Google's other massive releases over the past two days, Google Groups has been significantly revamped. In true, modern-day Google style, it now looks almost... pretty. It's only the first step of an overhaul, too -- there's more to come, including improved spam control, moderation and search features.

Google has focused on the discussions aspect of Groups first -- so while finding new groups and creating new topics has a shiny new UI, you will have to return to the old interface to perform administrative tasks. Check the New Groups vs. Old Groups page for more info.

As TechCrunch's Siegler mentions, the new style feels more than a little like Wave. With Wave's retirement, the redistribution of its team members, and Google's re-use of JavaScript libraries (and thus UI elements), it's safe to assume that some of Wave might have ended up in Groups. Still, who cares -- Groups looks so much better now.

IE9 Tracking Protection to bring better privacy controls to users

The FTC wants to fight cookies with cookies in their "do not track" scheme, but the folks at Microsoft have some ideas of their own. Today, they unveiled a new privacy measure for Internet Explorer 9 called Tracking Protection.

Microsoft believes Tracking Protection will "enable consumers to control what third-party site content can track them when they're online." The feature will work in conjunction with Tracking Protection Lists, which allows users to maintain a list of sites with which they want to share their data.

Tracking Protection will be opt-in, so it's entirely likely that the vast majority of Internet users will never even notice the option exists. The official IE blog post also notes that there's no clear-cut definition of what tracking is, so the feature will be a bit of a moving target.

Still, kudos to Microsoft for making strides towards providing users with greater control over their privacy. If you recall, the company tried to do something similar with Internet Explorer 8's InPrivate feature, but backed down due to external pressure.

Motorola's new logo: it's red

Been wondering about what impact Motorola's January split into two distinct entities will have on your humble consumption of consumer electronics? Well, after attending Moto's big Christmas do in London, we seem to have uncovered one of the biggies: the Droid maker is switching to a crimson new brand identity from the start of the new year. They won't tell us much more than that, but we can only surmise that the slight chromatic deviation will be in an effort to distinguish between the Mobility arm, which will make all the pocketable things we know and love, and the Solutions group in charge of the less glamorous business hardware. We're sure there'll be some reshuffling of middle management and other structural reorganizations taking place, but we've got the big story right here: the stationery, it is a-changing.

Ubuntu 11 alpha now available, features new Unity desktop, Firefox 4

Ubuntu 11.04, with Unity
The first alpha release of Ubuntu 11, dubbed Natty Narwhal, has just been released. It is classed as a "developer snapshot," and is provided more as a sneak preview of what's to come in Ubuntu 11. Regular users of Ubuntu 10 should not upgrade.

Along with the usual package updates and an updated kernel (2.6.37), Ubuntu 11 will also ship with Firefox 4. The alpha build includes Firefox 4 beta 7, and it will be upgraded with newer builds as they become available. The other big change is that the Unity desktop environment now enabled by default, replacing GNOME. You can still switch back to another desktop environment, if you don't like Unity (but looking at the screenshot above, how can you not like it?)

There are various changes and notes for the other Ubuntu releases -- Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Netbook Edition -- but mostly, this alpha is focused on the standard Desktop Edition of Ubuntu.

IE9 to Let Privacy-Minded Web Users Leave No Tracks

Microsoft announced Wednesday that it will add a "do not track" option to the next version of Internet Explorer 9 when it is released in 2011. The Tracking Protection feature is a privacy tool designed to help keep third-party websites from monitoring users' Web behavior by letting users filter content on a page that may have an impact on privacy.
